Why Carolyn?
When I started my business, I made an decision to always be open and honest with people who are interested in any procedure I do or don’t. I’ve been trained in many things, most will be amazing when done, and some wasting a client’s money, and will not be pretty in a few years. I love to educate anyone who contacts me for any type of procedure, before doing anything to them. I want them to understand what they are having done before they do it, whether it’s with me or not, I also tell them to contact others to see if they get the same information as what I’ve told them, and to make the best decision for themselves before proceeding with having something done permanently to their face. Because a mistake is more costly to fix, than having it done correctly, if it can be fixed.
When asked how did I get into permanent makeup, and why the other things I chose to add to my business, I simply say, I love making people feel better about themselves, and doing the best job I can to achieve that.
I’ve been an artist my whole life, I get that from my mother, drawing was my thing. After graduating HS, I wanted to be in the beauty industry, but the chemical smells didn’t agree with me in the 80’s. So I drove for a living, pretty much everything but a 18-wheeler. When hearing about permanent makeup from my mother, it intrigued me, so getting information and finding a school was what happened. I trained in October of 2000, was certified in eyebrows, eyeliner, and full lip color, I was asked by the instructor of the school if I would work for them at the conventions they do in MN, and when they come back for trainings, so I did. One of my models in class, after doing her brows, eyeliner, and full lip color called me 2 weeks after class and asked me to work in her salon, she had people wanting permanent makeup.? I opened Permanent Reflections, LLC in January of 2001. Within 1 1/2 years, I had 5 locations that I worked in, Isanti, New Prague, Minneapolis, Chanhassen, and Grand Rapids MN. I loved doing permanent makeup, and still do, I was doing procedures at conventions Women’s Expo Mpls, Senior Expos, Girlfriends Night out, Beauty Expos, and Minneapolis Tattoo Show. I was the first and only technician to do procedures at these shows.
In 2004 I started continued education, I have to many certifications that they are in a folder, I feel they overwhelm if put on the wall, but my accomplishments that are the most important are my Masters Certification, in May of 2006, and my Instructors Certification in October 2006, I am still the only technician in Minnesota that is legally able to train people to do permanent makeup. Then in 2010, Minnesota changed all tattooing laws, which in order to get a tattooing license you needed to prove 2080 procedure hours with paperwork documenting this. I was the second person licensed with the state in 2010, these are the most important documents that are on my wall. I still do continued education, but after 2020, it has been limited, less options for training.
In 2016 I opened a training center, Midwest Permanent Makeup Apprenticeship, where I trained, and apprenticed people wanting to get their tattoo license with the state of MN. I was the only one on one trainer in MN. I was training before this, but It started to get more wanted, and I wanted to give people more instruction one on one, where they didn’t get it with others in the area.
After 2021, I closed Midwest, and continued with Permanent Reflections, that never closed but this was my business with my clients. I went for training to do Plasma Pen, went to New Jersey for training and was certified with Louse Walsh Plasma Pen basic training and advanced training, the system I use is the #1 plasma pen in the world, this is a procedure that can be done on women or men. These procedures are life changing for most clients, they are a procedure that gives back youth. In December of 2024, I added Red light & infrared light therapy, which also helps with skin tightening. But, most importantly healing of your body for so much it’s crazy, my therapy panels are the #1 panels made in the world, when I do something I do the best for my clients, this has always been my saying, if I can’t do it I won’t do it.
In April of 2025 I rebranded my business, I’m working on men and women, I’m now A Fresh Nu U, LLC, formerly Permanent Reflections. I have worked on people from Spain, Canada, Mexico, some have traveled over 24 hours by plane to have work done by me, this makes me so proud that my skills reach near and far, because there are a lot of technicians out there, before taking a client on, I feel educating them on what I do and what they want is the best thing, talking to clients versus just giving out how much it is, is what has made my business, and my honesty with what I do shows.
